Art in the Open is committed to the development of a sustainable contemporary visual art scene, industry and community in Prince Edward Island. Through creative programming and collaborative community efforts, Art in the Open provides the necessary framework and platforms for knowledge and skill sharing between artists and cultural workers from diverse backgrounds and stages in their professional careers along with the development of local audience diversity and understanding.
The Festival inspires and celebrates expression from diverse communities and from diverse art forms. Some projects within the sustainable creative communities initiatives program are selected because they engage with demographics that have been identified by our curatorial staff as being under represented in the festival’s main program or speak to community engagement in ways that differ from the main program.
The inaugural March of the Crows parade was created during the first small town collaborations residency, and has become a legacy project within festival. March of the Crows in now completely community coordinated and is driven by the passion of its participants from the Charlottetown community. Every year Art in the Open provides the means for a Free public costume making workshop – and costumes that are given out freely as the parade marches through the festival grounds.
Art in the Open also focuses on community engagement and seeks local creative community members and groups to participate in the festival. Community groups and individuals that have been involved in past festivals through this program are – The Creativity Project, Nicholas Whalen, Lone Cry Singers, New Generation Singers, The Sidewalk Astronomers, Inspired Farmers, The Fox Club Society, McPhail Woods Ecology Project, Beaconsfield, and All Souls Chapel.
We are dedicated to enhancing professional opportunities for local emerging and mid-career artists. Art in the Open has worked closely with this town is small inc. to develop a two week artist residency program, small town collaborations, that enables mentorship based learning, knowledge and skill sharing between artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences. small town collaborations not only provides the opportunity for emerging local artists to work with an experienced professional artist and exhibit a project on a nationally recognized stage – the residency provides the opportunity for public education/outreach and networking opportunities.
Art in the Open is thankful to all of their dedicated and engaged artists and volunteers. Without the support of the local community a free, public event focused on the Heritage spaces, the public green spaces, the visual arts community and creative expression of Charlottetown would not be possible.

Le festival Art à ciel ouvert tient à assurer le développement d’une communauté, d’une industrie et d’un milieu artistiques contemporains durables à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Par l’entremise d’une programmation créative et d’un esprit de collaboration communautaire, Art à ciel ouvert facilite l’échange de connaissances et de compétences entre des artistes et des gens du milieu culturel. Le festival sert donc de cadre pour des gens aux antécédents variés à divers moments dans leur carrière professionnelle.
Le tout premier Défilé des corbeaux a vu le jour lors de la première résidence d’artiste encadrée présentée par small town collaborations. L’activité est ensuite devenue un projet durable dans le cadre du festival. La coordination du Défilé des corbeaux relève maintenant de la communauté et se réalise grâce à la passion des citoyens de Charlottetown. Chaque année, le festival Art à ciel ouvert présente un atelier gratuit au public pour permettre aux gens de fabriquer leur propre costume. D’autres costumes sont distribués lors du défilé le jour du festival.
En outre, Art à ciel ouvert met l’accent sur la participation communautaire en incitant des groupes créatifs de la région à participer au festival. À ce jour, de nombreux groupes ont répondu à l’appel, comme The Creativity Project, Nicholas Whalen, Lone Cry Singers, New Generation Singers, The Sidewalk Astronomers, Inspired Farmers et le projet de foresterie écologique de MacPhail Woods.
Art à ciel ouvert vise à créer des possibilités sur le plan professionnel pour les artistes locaux qui lancent leur carrière ou qui l’ont débutée depuis peu. Le festival travaille de près avec this town is small inc. pour offrir un programme de résidence d’artiste, small town collaborations, afin de permettre à divers artistes de partager leurs connaissances et leurs compétences. Grâce à small town collaborations, des artistes émergents ont l’occasion de travailler sous la tutelle d’un artiste professionnel et d’exposer un projet dans une vitrine nationale. En outre, la résidence comporte un volet d’éducation et d’engagement du public ainsi que des possibilités de réseautage, notamment par le biais d’activités portes ouvertes au studio, de présentations par l’artiste et d’ateliers gratuits offerts au public.
Le festival Art à ciel ouvert aimerait remercier tous les bénévoles qui y contribuent avec acharnement. Sans l’appui de la communauté, il serait impossible d’organiser cette activité gratuite qui met en valeur les sites patrimoniaux, les espaces verts et la communauté artistique de Charlottetown.
